Bach: Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV 170

July 23, 2017

[Cantata Sunday]

Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV 170 (Contested rest! beloved pleasure of the soul!) is one of Bach's best-loved solo cantatas. The work was written in 1726 for an alto solo. It takes the form and structure of the secular Italian solo cantata completely. 'The concluding aria is a triumphant song of renunciation of the world and longing for heaven, surrounded by the figurations of the obbligato organ.' (Dürr 2005: 436)
