Gesualdo: Beltà, poi che t'assenti

[Vocal Tuesday]

Carlo Gesualdo (c. 1561 - 1613) was a late Renaissance / early Baroque composer. The music in his sixth book of madrigals (1611) employed 'abrupt changes in texture' and chromaticism that 'is extensively unusual, and the harmonic language is so beyond the general expectations of the time that the resulting effect is one of surprise and shock.' (Shrock 2009: 83-84) Igor Stravinsky was a huge fan of Gesualdo, and helped the latter gained posthumous fame and acclaim. Stravinsky quoted an arrangement of this madrigal in his Monumentum pro Gesualdo (a ballet).
