Graun: Der Tod Jesu

July 7, 2017

[Vocal Saturday]

Since its first performance in Berlin in 1755, Carl Heinrich Graun’s (1704 - 1759) “empfindsame” (sensible) Passion Cantata "Der Tod Jesu" had long been one of the most frequently performed works in this genre. For about 150 years this work, like Handel’s Messiah in England, was performed annually in Germany during Holy Week.
