Purcell: When I am Laid in Earth (from Dido and Aeneas)
/Music of the 17th and 18th centuries/ [Vocal Saturday]
On the day of 1st July, I share with you the single most famous baroque lament in history, written by the most important English baroque composer.
In this recording, conductor Parrott and soprano Van Evera took an approach that may not be immediately appealing to ears attuned to modern singing ideals. But this rendition, to me, acutely captures the affect of the piece in both the singing and the playing.
